I just finished reading Tempest Rising by Nicole Peeler, one of the authors who might be coming to Arisia this year. I reviewed it on goodreads (although in all honesty I might have rated it a 2.5 if I had the option of half stars), but I wanted to save a favorite passage on the subject of the duties of a sidekick.

"Well, you have to write down everything I say," he said with a nod to the glove compartment. "There's pen and paper in there. And you have to underline anything you think is particularly clever, so that you can congratulate me on my quick thinking when the appropriate moment arises. That's usually when my theories are proved correct, which of course they will be. You also have to question anything I say that might need explanation, so that I get the chance to provide one in order to highlight my own genius. Oh, and if you could leave the pithy one-liners to me, I'd appreciate it. Pithy one-liners are not for sidekicks, I'm afraid."

Saturday I headed off to the BPL booksale, which while always dangerous was more so this month. All paperbacks were 25 cents, while hardcovers were a dollar. I got there a bit late so there wasn't much that interested me in the fiction areas, but the cookbooks, oh the cookbooks. Earlier in the week we enjoyed chow mein ("great for vegetarians!"). Tonight we are roasting a Cornish hen, which I have never tried before seemed like doing when we were at the Super88. Man do I ever love that store.

So I survived yesterday. To end it, we picked up my cousin and headed over to Pandemonium for the Orphan's Tales Release Party. At the end I was exhausted, but it was lots of fun. Today we slept in a bit, read for a while in companionable silence and then had some great discussions about HP fanfiction. Plus at the end of the evening there was snow! Sigh, it was a good weekend. Now back to the grind.

Several months ago, I read a copy of "Child of Earth" by David Gerrold. It was pretty good, and so I started looking around for info on when the sequel "Child of Grass" was going to come out. As far as I can tell though it does not even have an expected release date. Now according to David Gerrold's website, in 2003 he had actually taken one story, added a bunch stuff to the middle, broken it up into 2 stories, and sent both off to the publisher. Now part of me is wondering if it is likely that the publisher might have decided not to publish the second book, except that they promoted it (with included first chapter) at the end of the "Child of Earth". Does anyone have any good advice on how to figure out what is going on with this book?
