[livejournal.com profile] eoywin, the quote I mentioned in the journal entry might amuse/interest you.

23. The Summer Queen by Joan D. Vinge
This felt a little disjointed a first, but soon came together. It takes up where The Snow Queen left off, right after the Hegemony had left Tiamat, with childhood lovers Sparks and Moon reunited. In the last book I can't say that that seemed entirely satisfying as they had become such different people. That comes back into play almost immediately once this book begins and they actually have to start living their lives together. I have to say that I still find Sparks distasteful, even if you are "supposed" to feel at least some compassion for him ultimately. Moon's daughter is a bit of a snit, and I was sorry she never really filled out as a character. Also I am still slightly unsure of how the compulsion on Moon not to speak on the subject of the mers' role in the sibyl network worked. Despite these minor points, I did enjoy most of the book. I would recommend it, but not quite as highly as the first.
