omly: peacock tail feather (knitting)

I am thinking of joining the Knitting Olympics. Given the timing and the fact that I still need to TA, do research, take a grad level course, and generally be a mom I am planning on something small and portable, specifically socks for Tab in Lion Brand Magic Stripes in purple. In preparation I need to swatch, and I would like to use the 2 circular needle method to do them at the same time which means picking them up in the next few weeks.

I am very tempted to join too, but right now I have a blanket and hooded sweater to finish for Sage, and a Kitty Pi for the cat, and a whole bunch of other stuff planned in my mind. Hmmmmm... maybe if I finish her sweater before the end of the week I will more seriously think about it. I don't know what I'd knit, though. Socks scare me, but at the same time I want to try them. Have you done socks before? Are they as hard as I think they look?

Um well *ahem* yes, kinda. I have done a sock... singular. I have no idea where the double pointeds went though, thus my brillant plan to work on both socks at once! That way I don't forget where I put the other sock or the needles halfway through. Previously I used the toe-up method (aka Wendy's pattern). This involved short-row work which I had to figure out at the time. I think this time I might do them cuff-to-toe (ie with a gussett, heel flap etc), just so I can better compare in the future.
