Muwahaha.
I had some sock yarn that I had stupidly neglected to wind from skeins to balls before I left for WI. I will save the sappy story about the yarn and get to the cleverness part though. So in addition to not winding these, I didn't bring my ball winder. You can also use a nostepin, but I don't own one never mind bring one. A paper towel or toilet paper roll will work, but in the dorms and offices they lock those down. How was I to wind this yarn? I was going to try a local yarn shop and see if they would take pity (I still might), but then I jury rigged a solution.
Take one chair to loop the untwisted skein on so it doesn't tangle. Take 2 of those highlighters that you can stick the cap into the end so you don't loose it. Open cap to one and stick one end of yarn. Stack highlighters together (1 isn't quite long enough). Start winding ball at junction between 2 highlighters. When finished winding just take the highlighters apart and release the held end.
This actually resulted in a really pretty ball. I had forgotte what a pain this was to do by hand though. Man I love my ball winder!
