So apparently my purpose in life is to educate cashiers about produce. I don't think I buy especially weird things either. (The weird things are generally not sold at mainstream grocery stores. I love Super88 and the like though.) A partial list of things that cashiers have had no idea what they were:
  • Haas avocado
  • shitake mushrooms ("Are these mushrooms?")
  • brussel sprouts on the stalk
  • leek
  • pomegranate
  • shallots

Does anyone else have a list like this? Is this a function of where I live or what I buy?

Thats just the thing though. I am living in the Boston area. You would think this would not be as big a problem as it is.

And eep! Why the huge price difference? Just demand? They must have local formers or something right? Would that be cheaper?

PS Is there anything "ethnic" that you need shipped to you?

Apparently the price of lamb is due to low demand- as in people don't know what it is or what to do with it, that the prices can be horribly high because only the people who are going to buy it are the ones who really want it. I do not understand. Oh and local farmers are just as expensive which I just don't understand (never mind the fact that they only sell lamb in October. What?).

And I'm pretty good on the ethnic stuff right now. I think it's pretty bad that I can't wait until Trader Joe's opens in the yuppy suburb in the spring though.

Mmm Trader Joe's... We have one just down the street that is *so* convienent. It could have been one of the selling points on our current apartment (though we didn't find out until later).

Yeah, I'm not so happy that TJ's is going to be in the rich burb on the other side of town, but eh I can do monthly runs to stock up ;)

I still miss walking home from work in Pasadena and being able to pick something up though. mmmmm chocolate volcano cakes *drool*
