Bag Boys

I ventured out of the house briefly in order to get sourcream (for beef stroganoff; I love Roger), milk (dangerously low), unsweetened kool-aid (sadly unsuccessful), Wilton's frosting dye (for roving), and pick up Tab from daycare. Surprisingly it barely even rained, which was not to say that it was dry. In this adventure I discovered chain grocery stores really do not like you to bring reusable grocery bags. It seems to be a personal assault to their ease of bagging or something. And then when I finally get the point across that really I do want to use this perfectly good bag that I have brought all the way from my house with me, they start trying to sneak things into plastic bags to then be put in the reusable bag. Ahhh! No, please, no more plastic bags!

Question for you...

The other weekend I picked up some alpaca and wool to spin. This past weekend, a drop spindle and book on spinning. Last night, looking at the alpaca, I see that it needs washed, combed, carded, etc. Washing I can do. Combing I can do. Carding... unless I feel like spending more money on tools I'll not use often, probably not.

Have you the tools necessary to do it? If so, could I send it to you and have you do it for me? I'd pay, of course.

If not, no problem. I'll figure something else out. Maybe see if a LYS does spinning and could help me. Or see if I can locate the alpaca owner/spinner who lives nearby.

I do not have carders (hmmm though I really want some and have used them before GAH stop tempting me!), but honestly you should be able to just comb it. Carding just makes sure that all the fibers are going in the same direction. If you are careful you can do the same thing by combing in addition to getting snarls out. A pair of carding paddles runs about $20-30 if you want the "right" equipment.

Hmmm I don't know that most people would find that incredibly intimidating coming from me.

Many chain grocery stores have deals with the plastic bag workers union to only use those bags so the demand for the workers in the plastic bag industry will stay up.

When I worked for years at a major grocery chain in the area, I know that cashiers were encouraged to use plastic slimply because it was cheaper for the company. There was a big sign over by where you punched in that listed what it cost the company per plastic, paper, or paper and plastic combo. By that reasoning though, you would think that a reusable bag would be even better though.

Yeah, I totally agree. What really bothers me is that the paper bags used to have handles on them, so you didn't need plastic, but for some reason they got rid of the handles in the last few years. It really pisses me off.

Anyway, on a happier note, I have typed up most of my favorite recipes onto my computer....would you be interested in a copy? There are three or four main dishes that you can double the size of and that freeze well, so let me know if you're interested (or email me at this screenname at yahoo.com).

Sure I am always interested in new recipes. Do you have my email address (not the hotmail one)? Or do you plan on posting them in your journal?

Not always - this has been a recent developement, as I don't recall handles on paperbags when I was growning up. Whole Foods has handles on their bags as of last week, so you could always take shopping trip or two there to stock up and use them at other stores.

Lobby for a tax on plastic bags like we have here in Ireland. It's worked really well.

Or try some of these: http://inthewake.org/howtos/diy-recycling.html#projects

Honestly I think that a fee per bag would be an excellent solution. Some of the more eco-friendly small stores have an incentive program where you get a few cents off per bag you bring of your own, but it just doesn't seem to make as much of a difference.
