Roger picked up a e-machine tower a little while ago from the curb on trash night. We needed a box to be given to a family member who would like to learn some basic computer stuff, so we figured we would check to see if the hardware was still good. It ran a little slow so for giggles we downloaded and ran Ad-Aware. Results?

7 Processes Identified
12 Modules Identified
364 Registry Keys Identified
484 Registry Values Identified
587 Files Identified
25 Folders Identified

Total: 1479 New Critical Objects

Then Roger thought to run the program again after removing all of the above.

1 Processes Identified
1 Module Identified
1 Registry Keys Identified
3 Registry Values Identified
148 Files Identified
3 Folders Identified

Total: 157 New Critical Objects

No wonder it ran so slow!

Ad Aware is great! I also like Spybot, spybot does two things, one it zaps spyware, trojans and such and then it inoculates the system against reinfection, there is even a resident portion that actively watches against infection.

Yeah I sometimes use Spybot as well. Using Ad-aware to find how much crap was there was really more for amusement value than anything else as we then planned to reformat anyways.

I know how that is. I've one laptop that keeps randomly rebooting, I'm sure it's hardware, the drive has been reformatted and it still happens. My gaming system is currently dead, the CPU fried and now I'm just waiting to get a new board and CPU. I bought Half-Life 2 as a motivator :)
